Mastopexy- breast lift with or without augmentation

And some common conditions:
nipple inversion and asymmetry

Breast lift surgery

Breast lift surgery is a sophisticated operation that can last up to 3 or 4 hours and is carried out under general anesthesia. A breast is lifted and reshaped during this surgery for women who feel they have droopy or saggy breasts.

If you are considering having your breasts lifted, we advise you to go to a trusted hospital with experienced surgeons and doctors. Any surgery carries risks, so having a multidisciplinary team available immediately to handle any complications or special situations that arise will reduce any further risk to you.

During a mastopexy augmentation (breast lift and enlargement), your doctor will perform two operations opposed to each other: lifting the breast and enlarging it. These two opposing forces may give you a bit of pain.

You will need to stay at the hospital for at least one night for close monitoring. The Al-Khalidi Women’s Health and Breast Center advises patients to remain close to their doctor for about a week after the operation.

The type and location of scars depends on the extra skin you have. Either the scar is around the nipple or around the nipple and a vertical line going down, like a lollipop.

You will need good skin and good blood flow for the scars to recover properly. This is why it is essential for patients who smoke to refrain from smoking at least four weeks before the surgery.

After the surgery you will have dressings and may have drains for the fluid that forms as a result of the operation. You may experience discomfort and pain for a short time. You may also be required to wear a sports bra and refrain from exercise for 6 weeks after the surgery.

Possible complications after your surgery

Delayed healing:
The most common complication after wound infection is a delay in the wound’s healing, especially if you smoke, have diabetes, or if large, oversized implants are placed at the same time as the lift. In this case the skin will have a difficult time dealing with these two opposite forces.

Re-drooping of the breast (ptosis)
Implants, especially the newer implants, which the Al-Khalidi Women’s Health and Breast Center uses are guaranteed to last for a longer life than other older ones or saline solution implants. But a breast lift will not stay lifted the same way forever. If you breastfeed after lifting your breasts, they will droop slightly. It is important to discuss all your concerns with your doctor and ask all your questions before deciding to operate so you understand what to expect.

Is breast lift right for you?

A simple mastopexy is ideal for you if you are happy with the size of your breasts but feel they are droopy and empty.

An augmentation mastopexy is ideal for you if have droopy breasts and feel they are too small. At this point your doctor can lift your breasts and enlarge them with a small to moderately sized implant.

Patients outside of Jordan

For patients outside of Jordan, the Al-Khalidi Women’s Health and Breast Center advises you to arrive at least one day before surgery to undergo a full examination and consultation. Detailed planning and discussions with you is key to the success of the breast lift surgery. You are required to remain in the country one to two weeks after the operation so your doctor can monitor your recovery.

Nipple inversion surgery

An inverted nipple is the name given to the condition where the nipple is pulled into the breast instead of going outward. Corrective surgery is an option to bring the nipple to protrude. There are non-surgical options as well.

Before deciding on any surgery, it is best to talk to your doctor to discuss your options.

Surgery
Corrective surgery is a simple operation that lasts 30 minutes and is carried out under local anesthetic. However, in order to make the nipple protrude, the milk duct must be cut. This means that some women may not be able to breast feed after the operation. Take your time to consider if this surgery will be right for you and discuss all possibilities with your doctor.

In the recent past, the incision used to be around the nipple. Now with advances in surgery, doctors can perform a scar-less operation. Your doctor uses thin thread and a small knife. The incision is sewn from around the nipple and the thread dissolves on its own.

Recovery is quick. You may experience minor discomfort and within a day or two you can be back at work.

Symmetrizing surgery

Asymmetry, where the breasts are uneven, is a common condition among women. Usually the asymmetry is barely noticeable, but some women may have an obvious difference. Surgery lasts from one to several hours under general anesthesia, depending on the type of surgery required.

Surgery
If you feel you have asymmetric breasts and are unhappy or considering surgery, talk to your doctor about your options. Your doctor will examine you, take measurements of your breasts to determine the level of contrast and ask you which breast size you like best.

Surgery could entail a combination of lifting, reducing, and/or enlarging one or both breasts to make them as similar as surgically possible.

Sometimes the nipple becomes too small or too big or is displaced. Your doctor can also correct this during the surgery.

Your doctor will discuss with you the best approach after detailed examination in the clinic, and after learning about your preferences.

Recovery after surgery depends on the type of surgery your doctor performs and could take up to six weeks.

Things to do before surgery

Whatever the approach in surgery, your doctor will want to make sure you are healthy and your breasts are clear.

If you are over the age of 40 years and you want surgery, your doctor will ask you to have a mammogram, plus some additional tests as needed to make sure you are in good health.

If you are under the age of 40 years your doctor will examine you clinically. If your breasts feel normal and you have no family history, no further tests are needed. If the test is clear and there is no family history of any illnesses there is no need for a mammogram.

For women of all ages, your doctor will ask for blood tests to ensure you are fit for general anesthesia. Since the surgery is performed under general anesthesia, the older the patient, the more tests your doctor will request.
